life goes on...

30th January, 2003 - 12:00 am - posted in misc

About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting

For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Brueghel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the plowman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

does God play dice?

21st January, 2003 - 12:00 am - posted in misc, cultural

do things always happen
for a reason in life
or does God above
like to play dice

is life full of should's
or maybe could's
is everything meant to be
or is it how we make it?

are we looking back on our lives
like an old lady about to die
can our every waking moment
be her mere memories

do we only remember the past
can we not forget the future
is time-space travelling
a dream-only adventure

why do they say
if the big bang is true
then the existence of time
has a beginning too

and if nothing before the bang
has any consequence at all
then will our very present
one day be lost forever and more

so if there's a law for everythin
governing the entire universe
will we able to predict
the mind of God in reverse

do we have a choice
will we ever know
will we ever be certain
of anything we know
