in case you haven't heard, the Hong Kong CC licences have launched in Hong Kong yesterday! i've already switched from using the generic licence to the Hong Kong licence for this blog:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/hk/
:D
at the launch, up close with CC founder lawrence lessig & CEO joi ito
people who made it happen: edmon chung, ella koon, charles mok (whose birthday was on the same day as the launch), rebecca mackinnon, lawrence lessig, joi ito, alice lee, yahong li, pindar wong, chitat chan, peter ma, and the volunteers (ben cheng, haggen so, oiwan lam, jeromy, rob rogoyski, and many, many others not shown in the pic).
larry lessig speaking at the launch. he actually typed 唔該 in Chinese in one of his slides!
the most exciting thing about his talk today, i think, is about the creation of a CC registry. it's a central network for authors to list out their works published under CC. at first i thought it would also provide a function for users to "stamp" a photo, a song or a file of other media as "proof" that a certain piece of work was published under a certain CC licence at a given time, like the ImageStamper tool that I mentioned before. but it does not. i believe this is a big loophole of creative commons and i wonder what lessig has to say about it if asked......too bad i missed the opportunity!
joi ito gave a presentation too. i like his topic on interoperability and it does seem to me that he's bringing CC to another level. heard from Bill that he's a fun-loving guy too :P and i really like the idea of his new book: FreeSouls (love the name!). it's a photo book of portraits taken by joi ito himself of people he met over the past year or so. he got each of them to sign a "model release" agreeing to have their faces shown in the book. all photos of the book are of course CC-licenced and can be downloaded off flickr. it reminds me of a quote i read from techdirt:
"Books are souvenirs that hold ideas. Ideas are free. If no one knows about your idea, you fail. If your idea doesn't spread, you fail. If your idea spreads but no one wants to own the souvenir edition, you fail."
lessig and ito. a lot of lessig and ito.
yes, a CC taiwan tee!!!! thanks, Bill, for getting a size small for me :D :D i regret not taking a photo with Bob, the taiwan mozillian who helped Bill find this tee....
+ a flickr tee!!!! my second one already. big thanks to emily who shipped them all the way to Hong Kong and nick who help distribute them to us flickr fanatics :)
sharing stories of my use of CC with other hong kong bloggers :) i was glad to see friends like angus, edchok and leon again, but even happier to see many new faces from sectors like education and journalism coming to the launch =)
